Here’s why you should apply to be the 2019 Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess
There are two weeks left to apply to be the 2019 Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess and I encourage all young women who are interested to go for it and try out. Not only does the First Nations Princess learn about herself and her cultures, she helps teach people all over the world about how powerful and resilient our people are, while being a role model for other First Nations women. We need more young women as role models for our future generations and our current youth, and there are so many people I have taught this year about our cultures and our people, an opportunity I never would have had if I didn’t apply. This is me in Berlin! One of the many trips I was able to take throughout my year as Calgary Stampede First Nations Princess. One of the most valuable things I have learned about myself this year was just how much knowledge I have to offer others. I have had long and meaningful conversations with complete strangers about topics such as education, cultural sensitivity, language, dances and so much more. I was able to bring forth my own voice and teachings that were passed down […]
At the culmination of the performance season, the Stampede Showband prepares to compete in Indianapolis
The 2018 Calgary Stampede festival has come and gone for the year but the Stampede Showband is still in full swing as they prepare for the SoundSport International Music & Food Festival in Indianapolis. The festival takes place on a smaller spatial scale than what the Showband has been performing in Calgary and with shorter song length requirements. To accommodate their performances, the approximately 150 Showband members have been working hard to compress their 45 minute Saddledome Steps show to seven minutes, while tightening their field movements. This challenge includes learning new songs and new choreography, and both tasks have kept Showband members busy all week. Members of the Stampede Showband rehearsing outside of the TransAlta Performing Arts Studios field. Although the requirements for the SoundSport Festival are tighter, the competition is big. More than 35 ensembles from the United States, Canada and around the globe will be competing in various categories including the full ensemble and events like the DrumLine Battle™. Showband Drumlime members prepare additional songs for the DrumLine Battle™ Preparing for a world-class competitions right after the Stampede festival is to be expected for Showband members as it`s the last month of the group’s annual performance cycle.
